I could have moved in this direction by keeping my old bars and changing the stem but I would have probably been too upright on the tops and still to low in the drops. With a shorter stem, the compact bars were easy to set up so that I'm a little more comfortably upright on the tops, fairly neutral on the hoods and quite comfortable in the drops. My old bars were set up so that I was close to "neutral" on the tops (near the stem) and corners but was pretty aggressively stretched out when I was on the hoods. I had the same thoughts when I changed to the FSA Wing Pro Compact, but I actually ended up using a shorter stem.
